James Byrne

James Byrne

AMGA Certified Rock Guide

James found climbing ten years ago at a small bouldering gym in Hawaii, and it quickly became his passion in life. After moving back to the west coast he has climbed across the western US, but he credits Smith Rock with turning him into the climber and guide he is today, having climbed here since 2014. James has earned his AMGA Rock Guide certification In his time at Smith Rock. He enjoys pursuing all the disciplines within rock climbing from the boulders in Bishop to the big walls of Yosemite and Red Rock, and the old school sport climbing test pieces right here at Smith Rock.

His favorite part about guiding is having a chance to share the sport with people and help them challenge their own limits, whether that’s getting on the rock for the very first time or learning how to climb multi-pitch routes. He loves sharing his knowledge and experience with people and helping them grow their own relationship with the sport through memorable experiences and skill building. He also loves sharing his knowledge of the local geology, ecology, and human history.
