Self Rescue Skills for the Recreational Climber
Build your tool kit to deal with whatever comes your way
We will explore many potential scenarios that require efficient, confident action to assist a distressed or injured climber, react to environmental/weather issues and practice efficient systems and skills to manage risk. We will cover preventative considerations for risk management and developing sound judgment for single pitch and multi-pitch climbing.
Skills and technical topics will include:
- Tools and techniques: Essential gear, knots and hitches
- Belay transfers/belay escapes
- Assisting fallen leader or second (counter-balance ascending/ descending techniques). Rope drag issues: prevention and correction techniques
- Explore the Gri Gri and break assist type belay device as a multi-use rescue tool.
- Rappel issues: stuck ropes, ascending techniques
- Lowering/descent options and techniques for efficient retreat
